People are watching more television than ever before. With the advent of Netflix and other online streaming sources, it’s easier than ever to “accidentally” watch an entire season in one sitting.

“Nowadays, with online video streaming, the term ‘binge watching’ to describe viewing multiple episodes of television programs in one sitting has become popular,” says study author Dr. Toru Shirakawa. “This popularity may reflect a rapidly growing habit.”

A new study, conducted in Japan over the course of 20 years, shows that watching too much TV can increase your chances of developing a fatal blood clot in the lung. This is bad news for most of us.

The study, which involved 80,000 participants between the ages of 40 and 79, focused on two factors:

• Hours of TV watched per day
• Incidents of death by pulmonary embolism (blood clot in lung)

Researchers discovered that your chances of dying from a blood clot in the lung goes up by a whopping 70% if you watch between 2.5 and 4.9 hours of TV per day. That risk increases by 40% for each additional 2 hours, and even more for those who watch more than 5 hours of TV per day.

Upon completion of the study, researchers concluded that the chances of a person developing a blood clot in the leg that then breaks free and gets stuck in a lung increase significantly the more he or she watches TV.

The Japanese study began in an era without Netflix, without YouTube, and without “binge watching.” These results are particularly frightening considering how many people today spend a good portion of their day in front of the television.

These findings should be a particular warning to Americans, who watch even more TV than the Japanese.

If you’re worried that your binge watching habits might be hazardous to your health, make sure to get up and walk around between episodes. Better yet, stick with one episode per day (like it used to be).
