3 Simple Health Tips for Your 9 to 5

Staying healthy when you work at a desk all day is hard. At times, it might seem impossible! That’s why I’d like to share 3 easy tips with you that will improve your energy levels and help you avoid the physical ailments that come with office jobs.
Drink a Lot of Water

When I say “a lot of water,” I mean a LOT of water! And I don’t mean soda, juice, or flavored water. Try to drink as much H2O as possible. The benefits are twofold:

1. Staying hydrated is intrinsic to overall health. It promotes proper body functioning, clear skin, and weight loss.

2. Staying hydrated will increase your trips to the bathroom, which means you’ll be walking around the office more often. Getting up to walk every few hours will also benefit your spine and neck and help prevent soreness and stiffness.

Keep a bottle of water near you at all times to remind you to drink as much water as possible.

Protect your Vision

Staring at a computer screen for 8 hours a day can give you headaches and is seriously bad for your eyes. To keep your vision from deteriorating over time, you should look away (out the window if you have one) every 20 minutes. If you don’t want to set an alarm to remind you, you can download Google Chrome’s free eyeCare app. It will pop up on your screen every 20 minutes to remind you to give your eyes a break.

The program utilizes the 20-20-20 Rule: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Remember to Stretch

Screen Shot 2016-02-12 at 2.39.04 PMThe human body needs to be stretched every day. Most of us do not do this. To fight sore and stiff muscles and to increase energy and flexibility, I recommend doing a variety of stretches each day before and especially after work.

The pigeon pose is great for stretching your hips after sitting at your desk all day. You can also use “stretching time” as a way to mediate and decompress after a long day. Take deep breaths and let your stress melt away.

When combined with a healthy diet and daily exercise, the tips above will protect against common problems that plague office workers and will help you feel better and more energized throughout the day. Try them out and share your experiences in the comments below!
