Certain superfoods are believed to be healthier than other foods because of their nutritional content and ability to fight illnesses and detox the body. One of the newest superfoods that has everyone talking is umeboshi plums.

Actually a type of unripe apricot, the umeboshi plum is a part of traditional Japanese cuisine, but it is not often used in the western world. Before being eaten, the plum is soaked in sea salt and red shiso plant leaves and then fermented for flavor. The result is a mix of sweet, salty and sour with every bite of this juicy fruit.

In Japan, the fruit is used to treat hangovers because it is highly alkalizing which helps balance the acidity in the stomach. Many Japanese people eat these plums to improve their digestion and help eliminate toxins from the body. Although there is no evidence backing these claims, the Japanese believe that these plums alleviate nausea, fatigue and other general aches and pains.

One thing that research does back is the high antioxidant, calcium, iron and potassium content in umeboshi plums. Together, these nutrients work to reduce inflammation and signs of aging by fighting free radicals.
